Built like the proverbial tank, this is definitely not your run-of-the-mill subwoofer driver. In direct comparison to drivers used in some of the most expensive subwoofers available, this driver has little to hide. In fact, it can embarrass many of them quite easily. It all starts with a 15” curvilinear paper cone. Its lightweight yet incredibly strong design allows for a very high overall efficiency. That means less power is needed for the same output compared to most other drivers, especially if they are smaller in diameter. Like all Epik subwoofer drivers, the motor section is comprised of no less than three magnets. This triple-stack magnet design has more than one purpose. First and foremost it provides outstanding magnetic strength. This gives the driver its low distortion abilities as well as increased control over the cone. The magnets also provide a large amount of mechanical clearance to the voice coil. Even with its two+ inches of linear excursion, the driver has plenty of room to move. The voice coil is a lightweight aluminum design. It has been purposefully overbuilt to withstand much more power than it receives. In fact, the power handling on the Caliber’s voice coil is over twice as high as the amplifier it is paired with. Why does this matter you ask? The more a coil heats up, the less loud it wants to play. This is called thermal compression. A hot coil loses dynamic ability. If you are running a subwoofer driver at its limits, it can lose some of its dynamic punch. Our driver is never close to its thermal limits thanks to the our voice coil design. The resultant sound is always dynamic, clean and free from compression. On a long, demanding dynamic movie soundtrack, this driver never loses its step. It sounds dynamic and powerful from start to finish no matter how hard you push it. And of course, our driver is made right here in America. We take great pride in the build quality of every component that goes into our products. Since the driver is often considered the heart of a subwoofer system, we do not cut corners. It is built to handle anything you can throw at it, and remain reliable for years. |
