Driver

conquest driver topThe heart of the Conquest is its amazing American made 18” driver. It is the result of relentless measurements, listening tests and attention to detail. This is truly an all-out design with which we spared no expense.

Nearly two dozen 18” driver prototypes were built and tested for this design. Each one improved upon the one before it. As a result the final version of the driver that proudly sits in our finished product is a piece of engineering perfection.

The 18” driver size was chosen for its massive cone. The large pistonic surface provides increased efficiency versus a smaller cone. But the cone needs more motor strength to properly operate in direct relation to its large cone.

The answer was of course to build an enormous motor to go along with the cone. Supported by an equally impressive 12-spoke cast aluminum basket, is the magnet structure. More than twice as large as any of our other motors, it is overbuilt and then some.

Every other aspect of the driver was improved to handle the strength of the motor and the large and powerful 18” cone. The ratio of the motor strength to the weight of the 18” Kevlar reinforced cone is massive. The control it exhibits over the cone is part of what makes it sound so good and respond with lightning fast transient response.

The motor features an enormous triple stack of magnets. They provide a gargantuan amount of magnetic strength to the voice coil. In fact, using larger magnets doesn’t yield an increase in motor strength. The magnetic gap is literally saturated with motor strength.

The voice coil is a large diameter high temperature design. It is also designed to give the 18” driver huge excursion capabilities. Thanks to the coil design and all of the driver’s moving parts, it is capable of 3 inches of peak to peak excursion. Combine this with the large 18” diameter cone and you get some magnificent output potential.

Internally, the driver features a very effective cooling system. Air is swept past the voice coil and it naturally cools itself. It allows for the already extraordinarily overbuilt voice coil to handle and dissipate even more heat.
This results in a magnificent amount of dynamic capability. With its ability to easily handle its 1000w amplifier even without the extra cooling, this improvement makes it perform even more effortlessly without output-robbing compression. Simply put, the driver is able to handle massive amounts of power.

To reduce distortion even further, the driver is equipped with a massive and expensive quarter inch thick internal aluminum shorting ring. The ring helps with cooling as well as extending the frequency response of the driver far beyond the normal upper end of most subwoofers. This has an audible effect on several performance aspects of the driver.

Sound quality is improved because it significantly lowers the driver’s distortion characteristics. Overall efficiency is also improved by the top end extension being improved. More than anything else, the subwoofer gains a huge amount of chest-pounding “slam” because of the flat frequency response. The finished design is both outrageously efficient and very reliable.

Unlike many other larger subwoofer drivers, the Conquest’s 18” driver is lightning fast. It does not sound the way most people expect it to sound. It features the best sound quality of all of our subwoofers thanks to the attention to its design and performance.

Amplifier

conquest ampWith nearly 3000w worth of power handling thanks to its cooling system, even the power from its 1000w amplifier is handled with ease.

The Conquest demands all of its components to be absolutely top-tier in performance, build quality and reliability. The choice for an amplifier was very easy for us to make in this regard. We again chose BASH technology for this powerful subwoofer and the results are amazing.

The platform has been increased to a full 1000w RMS design. Like all of our amplifiers, it will also provide even higher power during short-term dynamic peaks. The custom amplifier design was built just for the Conquest. It was tested and retested until we had a component that exceeded our expectations.

This incredibly powerful amplifier ensures that our massive driver is always under control. A large amount of high-tolerance output devices supply the power to retain an iron-clad grip over the driver’s movement. They also allow the Conquest to achieve enormous output levels.

The Class D switching amplifier design means that even with a lot of power being generated, it still maintains optimum efficiency. On top of this high quality amplification, we utilize several large extruded aluminum heatsinks both inside and out of the amplifier. The largest heatsink is placed outside the amplifier to quickly and effectively draw heat outside of the enclosure and away from the amplifier.

The preamplifier section utilizes a Class AB design. This means that the signal stays pure and clean right up until it is handed off to the power section. Yes, the Conquest shares the same fantastic sound quality as the rest of the Epik subwoofer lineup.

Standard features include implementations for adjusting the gain to match the rest of your system as well as a crossover to blend in the subwoofer with your speakers. Power can be set to “auto” as well as on or off. The phase on the Conquest is fully adjustable in order to fine-tune its in-room performance with your system.

Inputs are provided for simple hookup to any music or movie system. High and low level inputs are both standard. Low level outputs also offer the ability to loop the signal elsewhere or hook up multiple subwoofers together. You can also bypass the Conquest’s crossover settings with the flip of a switch so you can control it via your receiver or home theater preamplifier or processor.

This is our highest power amplifier. It saw quite a bit of attention during the design phase, and the results are very easy to hear. The sound quality and output capabilities that this amplifier gives the Conquest are absolutely reference quality.

Cabinet

cabinetryHaving such great components for the Conquest means, of course, that the cabinet needs to be just as good.

The internal bracing is awe-inspiring. It stops the cabinet from flexing which keeps its pristine sound quality intact. Cabinet vibrations do not color the sound. The internal bracing also manages to provide magnificent rigidity while still allowing massive amounts of air to freely flow inside.

The cabinet is one of the most important parts of a subwoofer. In most cases, it is easily the most expensive part. This means it is very often the most easily skimped on by manufacturers, but not here at Epik Subwoofers. Take a look around and see how many subwoofer companies let you see inside their boxes. You will find very few that do, for good reason.

Our cabinets are the result of years of measurements and prototyping. As each driver was developed, a cabinet was slowly developed alongside it. The tuning and internal cabinet size was changed and tweaked until it gave us exactly what we wanted.

We started the design process using CAD software to optimize the joinery and internal bracing. Everything was fitted perfectly before a single piece was cut. Proper internal airflow was carefully examined and tested so we achieved extremely rigid walls while still retaining the internal airflow needed to keep up with our driver and enormous 6” flared port.

The biggest advantage our cabinets offer is their size. Most subwoofer manufacturers try to keep things as small as possible to avoid expensive cabinet and finishing costs. We do the complete opposite. We give you what you want: the best performance possible for the money.

Big cabinets are more efficient than smaller ones. We can do much more with a lot less power. We also maximize every square inch inside of our cabinets to produce the most internal volume while still retaining a rigid design that does not flex.

Our cabinets are built in-house in our own factory. We have or own high-speed 4-axis CNC machining facilities that allow even the most complex cabinets to be reproduced accurately and without compromise. Cabinet components are all cut to thousandth-of-an-inch precision.

All panels are precisely notched and grooved internally so that they fit together perfectly with no nails or lesser manufacturing methods. That means that there is no chance for assembly errors or quality control issues. The cabinet can only be assembled one way and every part always fits perfectly. Every Conquest cabinet is made up on no less than 12 separately cut parts. All components are superbly flush-mounted and fit perfectly into our cabinets.

We also use very high grade super-refined MDF. It machines better, fits better, finishes better and it sounds better than “normal” grade MDF. It also costs much more. Once we used it and appreciated its superior qualities, we never looked back. You will find it lining every cabinet we build.

Ports

The Conquest calls upon a pair of 6” ports to handle the lowest frequencies. Each patented port is fitted with a pair of flared openings that open to nearly 8” on each end. The amount of air that can be pressurized in a listening room by the dual ports is awe-inspiring.

When you are moving a lot of air, you have to ensure that the air flows completely unimpeded to eliminate port noise. We found that one large port always results in less internal surface area than multiple smaller ports even if they share the same surface area.

For example, our single 6 inch diameter port has the same area as four 3 inch diameter ports. However, it has exactly half the internal surface area as the multiple smaller ports. To achieve the same tuning, you also need to make the multiple smaller ports longer than our single port.

The ports feature a low tuning that lets the Conquest dig deep. The large cabinet is fully taken advantage of by the large port area and the low tuning. The overall efficiency of the system is part of why it is able to reach such incredible levels of output.

This translates into increased area for the air in the port to come into contact with. We arrive at the minimum amount of friction between the air and the port inside the tube with our single port tuning.  The result is reduced noise, less compression and better sound quality at any output level.

Grill

Our cabinet is finished off with a fantastic CNC machined grill cover. Should you choose to cover up your driver and port, the grill provides a simple, attractive option for doing so. It is held in place by diminutive yet powerful fasteners.

The black acoustically transparent grill features a smooth rounded-edge frame design. We also routed custom-contoured scallops into the edges. It gives our subwoofers an extra touch of class, rather than just being a big ugly square frame with 90 degree edges.
